The Communication Specialist

23 Oct 2024

Jay Borthwick ('96), a dedicated multicultural communication specialist, has built his career on bridging communication gaps for government and nonprofit organisations to connect with Australia’s diverse communities.

Driven by a passion for uplifting multicultural voices, he brings a creative yet practical approach to his work, ensuring that each engagement authentically respects and reflects cultural differences. Â鶹ֱ²¥ helped Jay develop resilience and a process-driven approach that continues to guide his efforts in supporting multicultural communities across Australia.

What motivates you to do the work that you do?

As a multicultural communication specialist, I have the privilege of helping government, non-government, and nonprofit organisations reach diverse communities across various languages and platforms. I work with clients to strategise the most effective ways to engage with both emerging and established communities in Australia. It’s a creative process that involves balancing big ideas with practical solutions to authentically connect with multicultural audiences. I’m motivated by the opportunity to support and uplift people from multicultural backgrounds in Australia.

Looking back on your time at Â鶹ֱ²¥, what are the most valuable lessons and values you learned?

As a boarder, one of the first things I learned was the importance of making my bed every morning—with purpose! Starting your day with a simple yet intentional task creates a strong foundation for the rest of your day. I also discovered that having a solid process is key, whether in boarding or being part of the rowing team. These experiences taught me the value of discipline, preparation, and the power of starting each day on the right foot.

How did your education at Â鶹ֱ²¥ prepare you for your current role?

Being dyslexic, my education was challenging, but it also taught me perseverance. I view dyslexia as a gift, one that required me to work harder than most. This determination to overcome obstacles built my work ethic and commitment to succeed.

Â鶹ֱ²¥ provided the structure and support I needed to hone my process-driven approach, which has been essential in my career. I believe that with the right process and foundation, you can set yourself up for success, no matter the challenges.

What’s your most memorable career accomplishment to date?

One of the most rewarding aspects of my career has been witnessing the impact of our work on communities. It's the small yet significant achievements—like communicating in Auslan, a language often overlooked—that stand out. I’m proud to have helped people access crucial information in emerging languages, whether it’s understanding basic electricity bills, securing a mortgage, or opening a bank account. Knowing that we’re breaking down barriers and making a real difference in people’s lives is incredibly fulfilling.

What advice would you give to a Â鶹ֱ²¥ student today?

For students looking to build a strong foundation for their future, my advice is to keep an open mind and be curious. Every question, every opportunity presents a chance for growth. Having a closed mindset limits you, but an open mindset can take you far. I also recommend two books that had a profound impact on me: Man’s Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl and Mindset by Carol Dweck. Frankl’s book reminds us that even in the darkest times, there is meaning to be found. Dweck’s work encourages us to embrace curiosity and lifelong learning. With the right mindset and a strong foundation, success is within reach.
